Willow, Molly. “Coffee Culture: A highly caffeinated tour of coffee shops reveals a wide variety of java, plenty of atmosphere and a very peculiar vocabulary.” Columbus Monthly November 2002: 105-106.

"… One group of Cup O’ Joe regulars are probably the only people … who know that 'aa' … means 'lava … [and] it’s the first … word in the dictionary that is acceptable … [in] Scrabble…. [They] meet at the German Village coffeehouse every Monday … for 25-minute cutthroat games of Scrabble … armed with timers, dictionaries and special Scrabble references that don’t define words, but deem whether they are acceptable…

"…A string of letters has been placed on the board, but their status as an actual word is dubious. … The nonword is ruled 'unacceptable' after the dictionary is consulted … . Earlier in the game, 'jee', 'xu' and 'zee' have passed muster…."
